Discover CambodiaCambodia is located in Southeast Asia, it covers an area of 181,035 sq km. the country is a low-lying alluvial plain that occupies the central part of the country and plain lies the delta of the Mekong River. To the east of the plain, ranges of undulating hills separate Kingdom of Cambodia from Vietnam. To the Southwest, a range of mountains, the Chuor Phnum Krâvanh, fringes the plain and forms a physical barrier on the country’s coast. Cambodia’s highest peak, Phnom Aural (1,813 m/5,948 ft) rises within the eastern part of this vary. To the north, the Chuor Phnum Dangrek mountains separate between Cambodia and Thailand.

Geographically speaking, Kingdom of Cambodia is split into six major regions: the western and northwestern mountains wealthy in tropical forest, life and fruit trees; the northeastern plateau abounding with tropical forest, wildlife, waterfalls, diamonds and magic; the central plain called an oversized space of flat land for cultivating in the main rice, corns and beans; for affirmative fish and mangrove tree, there’s the western and southwestern coastal plain popular with tourists.

Cambodia Climates

Situated in the tropical zone, Cambodia has sun almost year round. Each season has its own beauty and refreshing weather changes. The average temperature is 27 degrees C, the minimum temperature is about 16 degrees. There are two seasons: monsoon season and dry season. The rainy season last from May to October due to southwestern monsoons, Temperature range from 27-35 degrees C, with humidity up to 90%. The hottest month is April when the temperature can reach 38 degrees C. The cool dry season ranges from 17-27 degrees C (night-day). December and January are the coolest periods.

Cambodia Cities

Phnom Penh, the capital, has a population of approximately 1.5 million. Others major cities and provinces are Battambang, Siem Reap, Sihanouk Ville, Koh Kong, Kampong Cham, Kandal, Prey Veng, Takeo, Kompong Thom, Svay Rieng, Kompong Speu, Kratie, Steung Treng, Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, Svay Rieng, Pursat, Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Uddar Meanchey, and Pailin.

Cambodia Population

The population is approximately 17 million. The Khmer ethnic group constitutes 90-95 % of it. The population also includes a diversity of ethnic backgrounds: Chinese, Vietnamese, Cham (Muslims) and hill tribes called Khmer Loeu.

Religion in Cambodia

The official religion of Cambodia is Theravada Buddhism, which is also practiced in neighboring Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. King Jayavarman VII introduced Theravada Buddhism into Cambodia in the 12th century. The sight of saffron-robed monks is common throughout the Kingdom and almost every village has a Buddhist temple.

Cambodia Language

The language spoken in Cambodia is Khmer, while the second language (Spoken by the educated older Cambodians) is French. However, in recent years English has gained popularity. 

Cambodia Currency

Cambodian currency is Riels. However, the US dollar is widely accepted. Travelers’ cheque in US dollars can be changed at most banks in Phnom Penh. If you are traveling to the outskirts, it is advisable to use US dollars (get small change) although the Riel is accepted.

Cambodia Foods

Cambodia foods are similarly related to the cuisines of the neighbor country such as Thailand, and Laos, and to a lesser extent, Vietnam. However, there are some personal and unique local dishes such as Samlor Kako, Amok, Prahok fried in banana leaves. More than Cambodia foods, you can find European, Asian foods in some restaurants which are growing very fast in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Rice is the main serve foods which are growing in Battambang region. Most Cambodian dishes are cooked in the pot.

Rivers and Lakes Systems

The Mekong River flows through Cambodia from its northern border with Laos to its northern border with Vietnam. Phnom Penh was built in an auspicious location where the Mekong intersects with the Basak and Tonle Sap Rivers. The Tonle Sap Lake and the Tonle Sap River create a unique phenomenon over the world, reversing its direction twice a year.

Mountains in Cambodia

The Dongrek Mountains run along the northern border, the Kravagn (Cardamom) Mountain run southwest of Battambang. Damrey (Elephants) Mountain runs east and southeast of Phnom Penh. Phnom Aural (1,813 meters) lies east of the Capital between Kompong Chhnang and Kompong Speu Provinces. LOCAL TIME: + 7 hours GMT.
